About the project
DMPL Studios led the virtual production in Unreal Engine on Pilgrimage, an experimental film exploring the intersection of real and virtual worlds, and headed the MetaHuman work on it. The project featured MetaHumans composited into live-action environments, as well as real actors integrated into fully virtual Unreal Engine scenes.
The film is directed by Shinpei Takeda and was made in collaboration with ANTIMONUMENT, Atopus Studio UG and the Hochschule Duesseldorf VS/VR lab.
A markerless motion capture system feeds the game engine directly, which is what makes a mixed reality environment workable on a film schedule: body and face capture arriving live, with performance and environment resolved together on set rather than in post.
The film portrays recent ground zeros, among them Hanau in 2020 and Duesseldorf-Wehrhahn in 2000, where racist attacks took place. Building that material in mixed reality meant putting the camera at the centre of a sensitive subject, and the technique was chosen to serve that, not to decorate it.
