About the project
Visualising the Voice of Maria Callas was an exhibition built around one question: what does a voice look like? Five virtual reality works were commissioned, each taking a different answer, and shown together in the foyer of the Greek National Opera at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.
DMPL's founder developed one of the five virtual environments. Visitors put on a headset and stepped inside a space shaped by Callas's recordings, where the architecture itself responded to the voice rather than simply playing it back.
The piece had to survive a public foyer: short sessions, a queue of first-time headset users, and no room for a reset between visitors. That constraint shaped the build as much as the concept did.
