About the project
APNEA: The Absence of Breath is a solo game in development: a third-person action game built in Unreal Engine with MetaHuman characters. Elena created it during the Unreal Fellowship: Games, run by Epic Games. It was the first game created and showcased under a partnership with Epic Games, and it was showcased at Unreal Fest in Seattle in 2024, the only Greek game ever to appear at Unreal Fest.
A MetaHuman character explores underwater ruins, searching for the ancient Greek Antikythera mechanism. The world draws on Greece’s cultural heritage: temples and statues on a sunlit island, Greek-key friezes and red-columned courtyards, canyon passages, and dives through sunken ruins. The title is the word for a held breath, the state of a free dive.
The trailer moves between play and character work: MetaHuman close-ups with full facial performance, a face rendered as a point cloud, water and particle effects, and fights against armoured enemies.
From the Fellowship’s feedback on the finished game: “The result was a beautiful and immersive game that showcased both her creativity and determination.”
